What you’ll be doing

The Counsel will be an important legal advisor to Christie’s Art Finance outside of the United States and will support the Vice President, Corporate Counsel and the broader Legal and Risk team to originate international art-based loans. The Counsel must have excellent communication and organizational skills, be a self-starter, take initiative and have the ability and desire to interact with clients and outside counsel. Based in London, this role will focus on underwriting, negotiating, and closing art-based loans in EMEA and APAC.

What your day might look like:

  • Advise on all areas of an international art-based lending business
  • Draft, negotiate, close and service art-based loans, including drafting and negotiating the loan agreement and all ancillary agreements and documentation
  • Advise the Company on international regulations impacting a lending business, including licensing requirements and international tax matters
  • Develop and refine templates and processes for servicing the lending business
  • Develop best practices for the legal aspects of the lending business
  • Manage outside counsel and its spend with respect to lending matters
  • Draft, negotiate and review consignment, commercial and various other agreements
  • Educate and train business colleagues on various legal matters

What you’ll bring to the team:

  • Be an English law qualified solicitor with at least 3-5 years PQE in banking and finance work
  • Experience in private practice, or in-house as a transactional banking and finance lawyer, with experience in commercial and/or consumer lending
  • Experience working for a global team
  • Experience in cross-border transactions and overseas jurisdictions
  • Excellent legal and analytical skills including drafting, negotiation and presentation skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Develops and maintains international relationships – within the Company and beyond
  • Exhibits sound commercial judgment when balancing legal risks against business benefits
  • Works collaboratively while maintaining an independent mind
  • Is not afraid to make decisions - particularly when time pressured
  • Possesses strong and effective time management skills and is able to juggle many projects at once

It is an advantage if you have:

  • Regulatory experience
  • APAC experience
  • Fluency in an additional language
