The University of Sussex has partnered with leading legal and governance search business DMJ in the search for their new General Counsel and Director of Governance and Compliance.

As GC and Director of Governance and Compliance you will play a key role in the strategic direction of the University and all its future engagements, working closely with the University Executive Group, including the new Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Sasha Roseneil, and Chief Operating Officer (COO), Dr Tim Westlake. You will manage an existing team of lawyers and company secretariat and compliance professionals, ensuring the provision and management of effective and proactive legal services in-house and where appropriate, by external counsel.
In addition, you will be responsible for ensuring high-quality secretariat services to Council, Senate, the Executive and other committees and ensure the University is compliant at all times with its Conditions of Registration as a Higher Education Provider with the Office for Students.
A key aspect of your role will be to make a significant impact on the long-term direction, strategy and objectives of the University and provide insight to the University Executive Group on the delivery of their strategic objectives. This will include supporting the development of new systems and structure of the teams under the GC and Director role's purview, namely, Safeguarding, Health and Safety, Information, Competition and Risk and Business Continuity functions.
