Our client, a leading University with international acclaim has a fantastic opportunity available for a Lawyer with 2-4 years PQE to join their Legal and Compliance Services team.

About you

You will be motivated a lawyer looking to join a growing department. You will understand the unique challenges faced by the in-house function at a large and complex environment; and be able to provide support to the Contracts and Data Protection teams across a wide range of areas.

You will be expert communicators and strategic thinkers with ample experience of delivering timely, accurate and practical advice to a range of clients.

  • 2-4 years PQE (will consider outside of these parameters)
  • Solicitor or Barrister qualified to practice in England and Wales
  • Experience of delivering practical, timely, relevant and accurate, strategic and proactive legal advice, to internal business groups, and identifying risks and opportunities
  • Strong negotiation skills and strategic thinker
  • Experience of negotiating and drafting commercial contracts
  • Knowledge of data protection legislation
  • Experience supervising more junior staff

About the role:

To provide legal services for all administrative and academic departments and subsidiaries primarily in relation to: commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, data protection and information rights.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Providing practical, timely, relevant and accurate legal advice on a range of issues, identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Draft and negotiate complex legal agreements including commercial contracts, and strategic or academic arrangements.
  • Lead and collaborate with others on a range of legal and compliance related projects and initiatives, with a particular focus on commercial contracts.
  • Providing guidance to internal business customers as required.
  • Advise on global privacy and related information compliance matters across the group
  • Advise on information rights law such as subject access, rectification, erasure, portability, restriction, objection etc.
  • Support the group’s data security and information compliance framework and advise on updates to policies and templates.
  • Support with breach/incident management, including GDPR notification requirements.
  • Drafting complex documentation such as data transfer agreements, data protection impact assessments, consents, data processing agreements, data sharing agreements, related non-disclosure agreements, end user agreements, and privacy notices.
  • Provide support in facilitating negotiation with external stakeholders for key privacy provisions.
  • Advise and provide support on international data transfers.
  • Work with the team to provide responses to Freedom of Information Act (or similar legislation) requests and data subject requests.
  • Providing strategic support and advice in relation to potential contentious matters including potential claims and complaints.

Whilst the role is based in the West Midlands, the business operates a hybrid remote / office structure, with most employees doing 2 days in the office and the rest from home.
