Background of the Firm: Stephens, a boutique London commercial law-firm, is looking for one trainee solicitor to start in April 2023 and April 2024 respectively. Stephens was founded in London in 1983 and operates mainly within the fashion sector, acting for UK brands seeking to grow internationally and US brands needing legal assistance outside of North America. We cover business strategy, distribution, licensing, franchising, ecomms, data, IT, IP, marketing, compliance, litigation management and operational company support. We aim to provide our clients with a close, tailored service, more akin to that of a general counsel and in-house legal team than that of traditional private practice. Our clients distinguish us from others they have worked with by our commercial approach and our ability to integrate into their business.
Our client list includes (amongst others): Harley-Davidson, Radley, Fred Perry, Reiss, Orlebar Brown, Belstaff, UGG, Sunspel, Silver Cross, Melissa Odabash, Huel, Osprey London, dryrobe, Whittard, Teapigs.
Training Contract: Should the candidate successfully complete a three-month probationary period, during which they will be working as a paralegal, we will offer a two-year Training Contract. We do not have distinct “seats” within the Training Contract – the candidate will work across all areas of our business throughout. The candidate can expect a comprehensive training experience and should emerge with a good business and commercial law grounding, with a commercial IP slant.
Our ideal candidate: We are looking for a candidate who has a real commercial aptitude and a strong academic background (minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree and Commendation on LPC). Candidates with commercial experience will be of particular interest. Time spent working in a city law firm will also be of interest.
Our ideal candidate must be word-perfect in English with quality drafting skills and an attention to detail. We are a small firm and our ideal candidate must be prepared and enthusiastic to pitch in when needed, e.g. answering the phones, word processing assistance, managing couriers etc.
