Assistant General Counsel, Head of ViiV Functions

As our Assistant General Counsel, Head of ViiV Functions, you are accountable for leading legal support for central ViiV Functions at a strategic and operational level. The role requires sophisticated strategic thinking as well as excellent execution in terms of both quality and quantity. It works with high autonomy, needing little oversight or guidance and reports directly to the ViiV General Counsel.
You will be a key adviser to the External Affairs and Communications (EA&C) team, supporting our efforts to enable access to ViiV’s HIV medicines for patients around the world. You will also provide legal oversight of ViiV’s digitisation programme, including its use of social media, data and analytics , as well as support ViiV’s corporate functions, including supply chain, finance and tax.
Key Responsibilities

Lead legal support to the ViiV Functions, including management and mitigation of legal risks associated with ViiV’s Access to Medicines Program and to HIV Community Engagement activities.

Member of the ViiV EA&C and ViiV Legal & Compliance Leadership Teams, as well as the ViiV Digital Channel Steer Co.Act as a business partner to SVP EA&C.Develop and implement processes and systems to ensure effective governance of legal risk.

Provide strategic legal guidance to the development of communications and government affairs strategy, supporting delivery of objectives that drive business performance and reputation, and tailoring according to market. Markets are global in nature and range from the US to countries in Sub Saharan Africa. Analyse external trends and risks to gain insights that support business performance and reputation risk management.

Develop and influence business strategies and activities using sophisticated strategic thinking and in-depth knowledge of ViiV’s business, the competitive environment, external laws and regulations and industry codes impacting the pharma industry and applicable regulatory practices.

Manage workload to ensure the provision of timely, high-quality legal counsel that enables delivery of ViiV’s strategic and operational objectives, whilst appropriately mitigating associated legal risks.

Partner with the EA&C team to ensure effective engagement with national Governments, multilateral institutions, NGOs, patient organizations and other key stakeholder groups critical to the future success of ViiV Healthcare.

Ensure ViiV activities are conducted in compliance with the governance framework set out in its Shareholder Agreement.

Represent ViiV to customers, suppliers, competitors, government, and non-governmental agencies.

Act as lead legal reviewer of Global Communications materials (with responsibility for co-ordinating input from other appropriate legal reviewers).

Assist the development of public policies on key political issues and ViiV’s medicines access policy to ensure optimal access and to minimise ViiV’s reputational risks.

Engage in the selection and management of external legal counsel in allocated areas of responsibility, where appropriate.

Manage disputes and litigation pertinent to areas of responsibility.

Manage one staff member.

Partner with Compliance to drive accountability for compliance.Ensure the ViiV organization is adequately trained to secure adherence to Policies and SOPs; where needed, provide training.
Why You?
We are looking for individuals with these skills to achieve our goals:

Qualified legal practitioner admitted to practice law in England & Wales with a current practising certificate

Post qualification legal experience in a major law firm (across several areas of specialisation (see below)), with a significant proportion of that time working either working in, or advising as an external lawyer to, the pharmaceutical industry, followed by substantial experience in an in-house role in a multi-national healthcare company.

Broad array of legal expertise including a solid understanding of these areas of law: commercial, contract, competition, corporate, data protection, public company disclosure rules, ABAC/ interactions with Government Officials, regulations surrounding the development, manufacture, quality control and regulation of medicinal products.

Excellent drafting, communication, and interpersonal skills, with an ability to translate complex technical legal issues into plain English

Ability to interact effectively and confidently with clients at various levels of seniority.

Ability to work and navigate in a matrix organisation (often needing to exert significant influence without direct authority).

Ability to assess and manage competing business priorities (both within team and across different teams) in order to manage a heavy workload appropriately.

Cultural awareness and passion for supporting the HIV Community.

Experience of engaging with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Supra-nationals and/or not-or profit organisations (preferable).
