Position Overview / Purpose:

The Privacy Counsel is responsible for assisting in the development of Group-wide privacy and data protection principles, policies and practices, as well as their implementation across the company, enabling business innovation whilst ensuring compliance with data protection and privacy requirements.

  • Provide timely, strategic and commercial privacy and data protection advice and guidance that meets business’s needs
  • Provide specialist legal advice and subject-matter expertise required to support the international privacy program, product development and business objectives.
  • Navigate global regulatory trends, including new laws and regulations that may impact the design and marketing introduction of the company’s products and services and advise business on key impact areas and make recommendations for changes
  • Support the continuous excellence of the Group Privacy Program to ensure it evolves to meet new legal and regulatory requirements and stakeholder expectations
  • Support the assessment of the compliance and effectiveness of privacy controls and processes and recommend changes or best practices
  • Research privacy and data protection legislation affecting the organisation, passing advice onto relevant managers to ensure that the company's operations are fully within the law with special reference to its methods of business, its contractual relations and its process of negotiation
  • Work as a member of the Global Legal Team to develop and implement strategies to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of the global legal function across the company’s worldwide businesses.​

Key requirements:

  • Qualified to practice law in appropriate jurisdiction 
  • Minimum of 3 years practising law, with at least 2 years supporting and advising businesses on privacy and data protection issues
  • Experience in European privacy and data protection law, with expertise in and track record with the GDPR, a must. Experience in other laws an asset
  • Ability to make sound judgements regarding data privacy risks
  • A strong commercial instinct and assists to apply that knowledge in practical and actionable ways, and a proactive approach to problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to influence others and to perform successfully in cross-functional teams
  • Superior time management, organisational and planning skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with proven experience in relationship building and partnering. Must work well autonomously, as well as in a team
  • Excellent written and spoken English, and great attention to detail
  • Flexibility for occasional international business travel
