THE ROLE

An exciting opportunity for a Trainee Solicitor to join and train within the in-house legal team at a world leading University. Within this position you will advise the University, under the supervision of Senior Legal Counsel, on a broad range of risk and compliance matters (including commercial contracts, litigation, data protection and employment law), whilst also completing the Legal Practice Course and Period of Recognised Training as laid down by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. This will all be working towards you achieving a qualification as a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.

You must be a highly motivated and hard-working individual with good communication skills.  Working as part of a close-knit legal team, the ideal candidate will be adaptable, have excellent attention to detail and be keen to work with stakeholders in legal and across the wider University community.

JOB PURPOSE

The role is responsible, under the supervision of Senior Legal Counsel, for advising on a broad range of low to medium risk matters of a legal and/or compliance nature across a range of academic and commercial departments of the University.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Within well-defined parameters and under the supervision of Senior Legal Counsel to:

  • assist in advising academic and commercial departments of the University on a broad range of low to medium risk matters of a legal and/or compliance nature including: consumer protection, general contract law, real estate, anti-bribery law, and data protection;
  • review, draft and negotiate low to medium risk commercial contracts and other legal documents, providing advice and guidance thereon;
  • undertake legal research as required to enable the Legal and Compliance Services team to advise key stakeholders;
  • assist in the delivery, evaluation, monitoring and reporting of policies, standards and procedures, and to draft required documentation;
  • contribute to reports for internal and external stakeholders, as required;
  • Support Legal Counsel and Senior Legal Counsel with the administration of their legal files as required and under supervision.

  • Required to complete the Legal Practice Course and Period of Recognised Training as laid down by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, so as to achieve qualification as a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.
  • To participate in any secondment arrangement with an external law firm that may comprise part of the Period of Recognised Training.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Good honours degree in Law; or good honours degree and at least merit in Graduate Diploma in Law.
  • Legal Practice Course (or working towards).
  • Sound knowledge of contract law and contract drafting skills.
  • Well-developed analytical capabilities, able to interrogate and understand legal issues and to advise on their impact and potential solutions effectively and appropriately.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to clearly present an argument and negotiate to achieve a desired outcome.
  • Ability to prioritise, proactively manage own workload and work to tight deadlines.
  • Team player, able to work collaboratively within defined teams or as part of wider group of stakeholders
  • IT skills – competent with Microsoft Office suite and in particular good skills with Word.
  • Working knowledge of the GDPR.
  • Previous experience of working in a customer or client-facing environment.
  • Previous experience of commercial contracts drafting and negotiation.
