ABOUT BERMUDA

“You die and go to heaven, I will stay here in Bermuda” – Mark Twain.

Bermuda is self-governing British Overseas Territory in the western North Atlantic Ocean. It is an archipelago of 7 main islands and situated about 650 miles east of Cape Hatteras (North Carolina, U.S.). It is not part of the Caribbean as is commonly mistaken. Bermuda is a thriving financial centre, with one of the highest GDP’s in the world.

Bermuda is ideally located between Europe and the United States. It offers a convenient time zone, 4 hours behind London and 1 hour ahead of New York and Toronto, and provides easy access to major airports on both sides of the Atlantic.

THE FIRM

A leading international law firm with several offices globally including Cayman, BVI, Jersey, London and Hong Kong.

THE ROLE

An excellent opportunity for a UK or Commonwealth trained lawyer interested in a broad role in either the corporate or the finance space.  You will act for a number of large corporates, investment funds, financial institutions and insurers.  The practice is focussed primarily on mergers and acquisitions, where you will advise both buyers and target entities on listed and private company transactions, private equity investments, particularly in the (re)insurance space, and advise financial institutions and borrowers on syndicated, bilateral, secured (particularly in the shipping and aviation spaces) and unsecured finance transactions.  Corporate trained lawyers will be exposed to the more “corporate oriented” work and similarly banking & finance lawyers to the more “finance oriented” work.

You will need to be admitted in the UK, Australia, Canada or New Zealand for work permit purposes.

IS IT A GOOD CAREER MOVE?

This is always a tricky question to answer because it depends what you want from your career. If your ambition is to become a partner in a magic circle firm then a move offshore may not be for you. However, most lawyers that go offshore do not regret their decision and many will become Partners in the firms that they join. With offices around the world there is also now a way back “home” wherever that may be. Many offshore lawyers will not head back to the mainstream UK and US firms and this is because they do not want to. They have found a work/life balance that pays them well and gives them time to enjoy themselves. Partners in offshore firms often look fitter and younger than their peers back in London.
