Senior Lawyer – National Team (2 roles available)

Birmingham, Bristol, Exeter, Leeds, Peterborough, Reading, Warrington or Worthing

£46,374

You will be able to demonstrate a thorough working knowledge in a relevant area of law and have an interest in developing your expertise further in other legal areas. You will use your organisational skills and maturity of judgment to handle a complex and demanding workload with a high degree of autonomy and have a proven track record of delivering high quality work on time. You will be recognised as a senior practitioner and role model able to work with functional specialists, other lawyers and key external stakeholders in advising on relevant areas of the law, which may include some training.

One role will be based in our national Water and National Permitting Service team and the other in our team who has, for the last few years, been leading on EU Exit and the implications for environmental law arising from it, and Environmental Liability. Now that the UK has left the EU, this work will reduce and additional specialist areas of environmental law and regulation will be brought into this team, to be decided. Both roles are part of the Environment Agency’s in-house legal service and based in our National team of specialist lawyers who work closely with a range of clients, stakeholders and government departments advising on the implications of relevant laws and policies.

You will be a fully qualified lawyer (solicitor, barrister or legal executive), with relevant experience advising on technical issues. You will need to demonstrate that you are confident, and able to combine first-class communication skills with strong analytical skills and an ability to pick up new areas quickly. You will be flexible, have experience of influencing and persuading people at all levels, and be able to interpret technical legal areas in relation to a variety of customers and stakeholders.

These posts can be based in any of our main locations although some travel to Bristol may be required. The roles can be either full-time or part-time and we welcome applications from candidates seeking flexible working patterns including job-share. Please highlight any information regarding preferred flexible working arrangements in your application. The Environment Agency offers a career average pension scheme and a commitment to continuing professional development.
