Senior Legal Counsel - Data Protection

Our Organisation
The Football Association (The FA) is the governing body of football in England. We are responsible for promoting and developing the game at all levels; from grassroots through to the professional game, The Emirates FA Cup and the England international teams. We have two core assets: Wembley Stadium and St. George's Park.


The Role
To lead on the legal support to the FA Group on all data protection issues.


Key Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for the provision of legal support to the FA Group on compliance with data protection laws and regulations (including GDPR, DPA, AADC and Online Safety Bill);
  • Devising and implementing strategies to ensure legal compliance;
  • Proposing policy amendments to existing data protection policies;
  • Working closely with the Legal Counsel (Data Protection) and Data Protection Officer in relation to data protection compliance;
  • Working collaboratively with all relevant internal and external stakeholders, e.g. FIFA, UEFA, the Premier League, England team operations, and the FA's safeguarding, marketing and product development teams;
  • Working with the other members of the FA legal team to provide proactive advice to The FA Group on data protection matters;
  • Managing the FA Group's responses to Data Subject Access Requests and putting in place procedures to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation; and
  • Executing any additional tasks required in order to meet the FA Group's priorities.


What we are looking for:


Essential

  • At least 6 years working as a qualified solicitor at a major law firm or in-house (however candidates with relevant skills sets regardless of post qualification experience will be considered).
  • Able to demonstrate a breadth of relevant knowledge of data protection law.
  • Ability to demonstrate clear and concise written and oral legal advice.
  • Ability to demonstrate the application of robust legal advice in a practical manner.
  • Excellent academic record.


Desirable

  • Previous experience of sports law.
  • In-house experience (e.g. a secondment).
