Job Details

Our client is a global banking entity that works with developing countries to strengthen their economies by offering a range of financial products and advisory services.

As a pioneer in ethical, sustainable investments, they are now looking for a lawyer from the energy sector who will help the bank deliver on its ongoing commitment to tackling climate change.  This lawyer will create firm-wide legal reform, whilst developing strategies with local governments, agencies and clients in the bank’s countries of operations to further the reliance on green investments.

The successful candidate will:

  • Draft and advise on sustainable and climate change-related laws and regulations;
  • Develop economically robust, low carbon solutions which harness digital transformation tools to help companies transition to net zero;
  • Increase engagement on reforms internally and externally by developing corporate climate governance action plans;
  • Incorporate climate change strategy into prospective investments by the bank and the early stages of client projects;
  • Promote legal reform by presenting developments to international conferences and by liaising with International Financial Institutions to help create an international standard setting of best practices.

The successful candidate must be an excellent communicator - someone who can educate and inspire change in others, whether they are talking directly to a single banker, liaising with a foreign governmental body, or to a large audience at an international conference.

As such, an absolute pre-requisite for this role is clear, demonstrable experience of driving legal reform in the energy sector previously (oil, gas and/or renewables) so you will likely hail from the in-house arena, though our client is open to candidates from private practice.

Though the role will be located in London, we welcome applications from lawyers overseas. Wherever you are currently based, you will:

  • Be a qualified lawyer with at least 5 years’ relevant experience;
  • Have sound knowledge of energy regulation (i.e. EU 3rd and 4th Energy Package)
  • Have international experience, ideally with experience/training/qualification in both common and civil law;
  • Have fluency in English to a professional level, and ideally another European language.

Our client will offer a competitive salary and a market-leading pension and benefits package to the successful candidate, and the opportunity to work with a highly respected and established team of lawyers.

This is a very rare and exciting opportunity for a lawyer to be an instrument of change on a granular, firm-wide and international level, at a crucial time for us all.
