Job Details

Over 3,300 new homes built.

A 47% reduction in rough sleepers.

809 new jobs created as a result of regeneration projects.

We’ve made great progress here in Salford over the last few years.

But in truth, we’ve only just got started. So as we emerge from lockdown, we’re looking to transform this city like never before. To create a fairer, greener, healthier and more inclusive city. One built on a vibrant, green economy. One that embodies our unique heritage, but also our pride and passion – the Spirit of Salford.

As our City Solicitor, you’ll play a key role in making this happen.

You’ll do that by ensuring our decision-making is legal and fair, and made within proper governance arrangements. It’s a high-profile appointment. Acting as our chief legal adviser, you’ll be a key member of the corporate management team, advising the City Mayor, his Cabinet and political groups, together with the Chief Executive ensuring all decisions are lawful and fair.  You’ll provide expert advice on everything from major service transformation to regeneration projects and the latest developments in law and regulation but you’ll also be solutions focussed to reach desired outcomes and deliver key priorities.

There’s another dimension to this role, too. As our statutory Monitoring Officer, you’ll be responsible for ensuring lawfulness and fairness of decision-making, the operation of the Council’s constitution and ensure the Council, its officers and its elected members maintain the highest standards of conduct in everything they do.

So what are we looking for?

Put simply, a lawyer with the communication, leadership and political acumen to operate as an effective and credible Monitoring Officer. Right now, you could be a practising solicitor or barrister. What’s not in doubt is that you have a detailed understanding and command of law as it relates to local authorities. As well as technical expertise, you’ll be solutions focussed, know how to communicate complex issues of law and democratic procedure to senior colleagues with real clarity and confidence. You’ll also ideally have a proven track record of acting as Local Authority Monitoring Officer or Deputy Monitoring Officer.
