In the US, this law firm was one of the most prolific partner hirers. Hence it comes as no surprise that the firm’s management is decisive and efficient when hiring law firm partners in London. The London office hired a high-profile commercial litigation team hire in 2020, which properly launched litigation as a practice in London. Since that hire, less than a year ago, the team has benefitted from some very high profile US generated internal referrals and has had a record start in terms of cash collections. The platform and brand have truly accelerated their practice and given them everything they wanted from a move. Unsurprisingly litigation is now at the top of the list for London partner hires in 2021.
Over the last 10 years or so, the absence of a litigation practice in London has meant there have been a number of lost opportunities, which has been frustrating for the European and US partners, who have needed to refer significant matters to other firms in London. One particular matter commenced in the US a few years ago but needed substantial UK litigation capacity. Although a US partner has remained a trusted advisor to the client, a London litigation team benefitted to the tune of many millions on the first phase of this case. Yet, with the hire of the commercial litigation team, the next phase might be able to run from the London office, and a financial services regulatory enforcement partner will need to be hired. This is quite an unusual and very exciting opportunity; the client is globally recognised, and you will need to have a good reputation in the market.
