 The Firm

Our client is a fast growing regional law firm with offices across numerous locations with plans for further growth across the U.K. The firm has built up a high level talent pool of professionals with deep sector specialisms and value associated with not having expensive London overhead.

They provide a first class service to their clients with the ability to services their needs at scale. Many of their partners are from top City law firms with expertise spanning practice areas to include real estate, dispute resolution and capital markets.

The Opportunity

The equity partners of the firm are bullish about the current market opportunities in their practice areas and with the growth potential of their business over the coming years. This has led to their decision to recruit additional partners into some of the core areas of their firm one of which is the tax litigation group. They have already built up capability in non-contentious corporate tax and now seek to add contentious expertise. The focus will be on companies and individuals who are being investigated on criminal or civil proceedings and to advise in relation to both types of investigation and work closely with accountants. They aim to deal with criminal prosecutions and cases proceeding in the First-tier Tribunal and Upper Tribunals. Matters dealt with include HMRC, raids, seizure and investigations, carousel fraud and MTIC fraud, Detention and seizure of goods by border  control, VAT assessments and appeals, judicial reviews, money laundering, winding up petitions by HMRC and abuse of powers by HMRC.

They anticipate new areas of work to arise out of the COVID pandemic in areas to include furlough fraud and ‘eat out to help out’ fraud. This is a rare opportunity for ambitious senior tax litigation specialists to join a progressive law firm with big ambitions for the future.

The candidate

This would suit an existing partner either solicitor or tax accountant seeking a fresh challenge or an ambitious senior associate/counsel who is ready to step up into a partnership role. Candidates will have an established or burgeoning name in this highly specialised area of law and know and be known to the inner circles of HMRC. Your approach to your clients will be a combination of providing strategic advice on how to navigate the issues raised by HMRC and how best to handle any ensuing litigation, using the resources of the firm, and your chosen counsel at the Tax Bar.

Company

Court 1 Capital is a dedicated platform providing strategic career and recruitment advice to Solicitors and Barristers (‘Lawyers’), whether in Private Practice or In-House. Divorced from the often confused and conflicted world of direct legal recruitment, our goal is to enhance the business performance of Lawyers: delivering thoughtful guidance and realistic pathways in an ever changing and challenging legal market.

We have over 25 years’ experience of placing solicitors into law firms globally, high profile partner and team moves, establishment of foreign offices for major firms, assisting firms in establishing their own offices or affiliations with top local firms in sought after jurisdictions and facilitating deal flow into law firms from our network of clients. We also work with most of the litigation funders through placing lawyers into their underwriting teams, referring high values cases to funders and facilitating co-funding of cases between funders through our own and broker networks.
