Salary: £163,000 - £168,000, pension, and performance bonus

This is a unique opportunity for an outstanding leader with extensive experience of competition law or economics, competition policy, and merger control in particular to play a pivotal role in the leadership of the CMA.
Following the UK’s exit from the European Union and the expansion of our high-profile cases there has arguably never been a more exciting time to join the CMA. This is particularly important in our mergers portfolio, where we have taken on responsibility for investigating bigger trans-national mergers which would previously have been reviewed exclusively by the European Commission. In short, our global role in promoting competition whilst protecting consumers, particularly vulnerable consumers, is now bigger than ever before.
Reporting to the Chief Executive and as a member of the CMA Board, Executive and Policy Committees, you will be responsible for the Markets and Mergers Directorate and regulatory appeals. You will lead a team of 200 professionals providing strong, visible, and dynamic strategic leadership across your teams, managing associated work streams to help make markets work better for the benefit of consumers, business, and the economy generally.
Your remit will include:
- the effective supervision of merger cases and market studies at each stage of the relevant processes to enable robust decision making and timely conclusion of cases;
- ensuring the effective defence of CMA merger and market decisions in any appeal against such decisions;
- developing a cadre of senior experienced staff within multi-disciplinary teams capable of providing the highest quality intelligence, analysis and support for decision takers across a range of competition, consumer and regulatory issues, ensuring the appropriate development of skills; and
- participating fully in the overall leadership and management of the authority as a member of its main governance bodies, an executive member of the CMA Board, and a member of the Senior Executive Team, the Executive Committee (XCo), the Case and Policy Committee (CPC) and the Pipeline Steering Group (PSG).
You will be a strong advocate for competition and consumers, understand what drives effective operation of markets, and enhance the reputation of the CMA with a clear brand and vision.
For this high profile and influential role, you will possess:
- Evidence of deep familiarity with UK competition law and/or competition economics, as well as competition policy including significant experience of merger cases, and a proven track record of working successfully in the area at a senior level.
- Experience and strong track record of successful delivery of a portfolio of projects with varying and stretching challenges, complexities and delivery timescales.
- Outstanding leadership skills, including the ability to provide direction and deliver results which meet demanding quality and deadline requirements.
- Evidence of having worked with senior decision makers and having influenced, at a high level, decisions on issues with economic or legal implications.
