When it comes to nation-changing purpose, few organisations can match the Government Legal Department. Our work touches almost every aspect of UK life. It has a lasting, positive impact on millions of people. And we’re immensely proud of what we do. With us, you can build a career around life-changing law, working on extraordinary issues of rare depth and complexity. Along with excellent training, real work/life balance and a truly team-spirited environment.

For high-calibre associates, there’s nowhere like it.

The role

You’ll join one of seven legal teams providing commercial law and commercial litigation support to a range of Government Departments. Our clients include high-profile departments such as Home Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Cabinet Office and the Department for International Trade.

Whichever department you work in, you’ll drive value from departmental contracts and take on interesting, varied and complex commercial work, advising on some of the most vital commercial issues in government.

About you

You’ll be a qualified solicitor or barrister with a completed training contract, pupillage or similar.

We look for excellent powers of analysis and sound commercial legal judgment, combined with constructive problem-solving skills and the ability to provide clear, risk-based advice. You’ll also need strong negotiating skills, the ability to draft commercial contracts, and an understanding of the role of lawyers in Government.

You’ll also need a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree. Before your employment can start, you’ll need to complete Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) as part of the Civil Service background checks.

What we can offer

As a member of the Civil Service, you’ll be able to enjoy flexible working, generous annual leave, a Civil Service pension, a wide range of staff networks and travel and childcare allowances.
