Senior Legal Director (x 2)

Salary: £123,468 – £135,000 plus benefits

Location: London or Edinburgh

Contract: Permanent

Hours: Full time / Part time / Flexible

Unique opportunity for senior lawyers with expertise across competition enforcement and public law to be at the forefront of legal and policy thinking in competition law enforcement while playing a pivotal role in the leadership and management of CMA’s Legal Service (100 lawyers).

Following the United Kingdom’s exit from the EU, the CMA’s responsibility for the review of complex merger, cartel and antitrust cases has substantially increased.  This creates new and exciting opportunities for the CMA to be at the forefront of legal and policy thinking in competition law enforcement and means that strong relations with international counterparts are essential. At the same time, the CMA maintains an ambitious programme of markets and consumer protection enforcement work and is establishing two important new functions: the Office for the Internal Market and the Digital Markets Unit.

As one of four Senior Legal Directors, reporting to the General Counsel, you will play a key role in achieving the CMA’s mission by bringing leadership and vision to legal teams, setting the strategy and ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal advice and robust analysis across all areas of the CMA’s case work. The CMA’s legal teams, led by the Senior Legal Directors, work closely and collaboratively with project teams and decision makers on an integrated basis from the outset of an investigation through to final decisions and subsequent litigation.

We are recruiting two Senior Legal Directors to join this team (alongside two already in post). On appointment, you can expect to be leading the legal teams advising across one or more of the following areas:

  • the CMA’s wide-ranging portfolio of antitrust cases (including digital CA98 cases);
  • supporting the establishment of the new Digital Markets Unit and development of a new regulatory framework for digital markets alongside associated market studies/investigations;
  • the work of the newly established Office for the Internal Market and potentially any subsidy control role that the CMA may be asked to take on.

Additionally, one of the Senior Legal Directors will have senior leadership responsibility for managing the CMA’s Policy & International Directorate which provides integrated policy and international support across the CMA’s competition and consumer functions including engagement with key UK and international stakeholders and counterparts.

If you are a senior competition lawyer with an established track record of delivering complex and strategic legal advice, a strong understanding of the policy challenges and opportunities facing the CMA and significant experience of leading and motivating professional teams, and if you want to work in a fast-changing and challenging environment doing important work in the public interest, then this could be the ideal role for you.
