The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Home Office. We provide information to employers and other organisations in England and Wales (and barring information only in Northern Ireland) so they can make informed recruitment and licensing decisions, especially for employees and volunteers working with vulnerable groups.
We also determine whether an individual can take up relevant posts by making decisions about inclusion on a barred list.

Key accountabilities:
• Conduct litigation on behalf of the DBS in Courts and Tribunals
• Instruct and manage external legal advisers in relation to a broad range of complex legal matters
• Build relationships with colleagues to encourage early engagement by legal services in projects and plans
• Provide timely, high quality, solution driven legal advice to the DBS to support the delivery of DBS services in areas including:
1. Law relevant to the DBS services of Barring and Disclosure certificates
2. Public Law
3. Data Protection legislation and Freedom of Information
4. Commercial law
5. Commercial disputes
6. Commercial projects
• Support the development and implementation of DBS policies
• Provide legal training to colleagues
• Develop expertise in areas of law relevant to the DBS
• Supervise members of the Legal Support Team
Essential
Significant experience in a legal field relevant to DBS activities, such as:
• Civil litigation
• Advising on Data Protection matters
• Working in a fast- paced in-house legal team
• Creative, can do attitude to in-house legal work
• Collaborative, client driven approach to support delivery of organisational objectives
• Qualified to practise as a Solicitor or Barrister in England and Wales
Desirable:
• Experience of advising a public body
• Experience of negotiating and drafting commercial contracts
