In an increasingly changing and digitalised world, it is crucial that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is compliant with data protection and freedom of information legislation. To ensure the CMA continues to operate to best practice standards of data protection law and GDPR, we have an exciting opportunity to join our Legal Services team.

Working jointly with another Assistant Legal Director and the Information Access team, your key focus will be to provide advice across the CMA on information law and to promote an awareness of information legislation. This will include providing high-quality legal analysis, advising on new policies and developing new internal procedures to ensure robust compliance with data protection law (including GDPR) and freedom of information legislation.

You will also work with case teams on antitrust cases in the digital sector where data protection law is an important issue and support the CMA’s work on establishing the Digital Markets Unit and the Office for the Internal Market.

The role will also include assisting the Legal Director in dealing with any requests for reviews of the CMA’s decisions regarding freedom of information, as well as keeping up to date with legal developments with information law and creating and delivering training on information law as required.

To be considered, you will need to be a fully qualified lawyer who is entitled to practise in the UK or willing to sit and pass the QLTT on appointment. Significant knowledge of and practical post-qualification experience of providing legal advice related to freedom of information law and data protection law (including GDPR) is essential. You will also need experience of delivering high quality analysis, advising on decisions, writing reports and contributing to policy.

In return, the CMA is a hugely rewarding, diverse and stimulating place to work – an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so. We offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, our employee well-being programme and favourable consideration of flexible working.

As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome suitably qualified applicants from all backgrounds and recruit by merit on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles.
