In the words of George Soros, “misconceptions play a prominent role in my view of the world”. That quote could well be a footnote in the chapter of this law firm’s current position in the market. Whilst management has been prominently working on significant change, the overall perception of the firm is yet to recalibrate. This is particularly relevant for the real estate practice, which has had a strong year in an obviously challenging 2020 market. The lawyers have played to their strengths, offering clients the full suite of real estate capability and innovative fee structures which have allowed the real estate lawyers to significantly enhance their fee income on 2019. One partner, for example, has increased fee income by over 35% in 2020 and the real estate group has a profit margin of over 70%! The platform allows lawyers to capture all aspects of clients’ real estate work with an innovative approach to CRM and business services.
The firm has not hired in real estate for some time but after significant success the firm is looking to hire an investment-focused real estate partner. Across the firm there are almost 150 real estate lawyers, and real estate is one of three core sectors. The investment clients have fortunately remained active in 2020 and include real estate funds, REITS, private equity funds, corporates (mainly larger institutional clients), property groups and long income funds.
The partners in the team are mainly long-term laterals. Some of the real success stories have been partners who have moved from less dedicated real estate firms where they have been unable to offer all of the bells and whistles of a full service real estate sector practice. Strategically there is a need but also the current timing is very good to join this firm.
