With the UK still in lockdown the first full month of trading under this unusual regime has come to an end. Needless to say, recruitment has not been at the top of any law firm’s agenda, but there are firms maintaining the 2020 strategy for growth in very specific practice areas. After all, at the end of all this, the London office of a US firm will still need a developed corporate practice with top quality lawyers. Although the market is challenging and the future looks unpredictable, this well managed and financially prudent US firm is still interviewing corporate partners, as there is a strategic need for a head of corporate in London. The firm has started the process while in lockdown and has revamped the partner recruitment process so significant strides can be made virtually. By way of background, the firm globally is a consistent performer financially and benefits from some large litigation wins every few years, which give the partners an extra bounty. The practice areas are more esoteric so interestingly in the current climate fee revenues and cash collections have remained resilient in both the US and internationally. The lawyers on the US side of the practice have remained busy on both government and private work. The London office has maintained fee income from European clients but there has also been significant referral work from the US (which accounted for almost 50% of new matters opened in March 2020).
The office has always had a corporate practice but arguably not quite the right one. The firm advises public, private and high net worth individuals on corporate matters – corporate finance, M&A, private equity and securities. Clients range across several industry sectors including – financial services, insurance, technology, communications, healthcare, rail/transportation, electronics, blockchain, manufacturing. You will run the corporate department in London and the firm has great track record of hiring teams. You will be immediately integrated with the US and benefit from being part of a US firm with access to major US clients. The firm management can articulate a clear strategy and what the firm expects from the international platform and the London office.
