The Organisation
UK Biocentre provides a centre of excellence for biomedical research to the academic, pharmaceutical and biotech research community and exists to support global biomedical research providing world class sample processing, storage and analysis services.
UK Biocentre was established in 2011 as the service arm of UK Biobank, a national research initiative that has collected biological samples and data from 500,000 UK volunteers. UK Biobank is regarded as the world’s premier biobank and implemented an industrialised approach to biological sample processing and management that is now available, through UK Biocentre, to the international scientific research community.
UK Biocentre is also one of seven Lighthouse Labs – the biggest network of diagnostic testing facilities our country has ever seen – and our laboratories in Milton Keynes are at the forefront of the national COVID-19 testing effort having now analysed more than 3 million swab samples.
Since being commissioned by the UK Government to provide this service, we have repurposed existing laboratories and built new ones to provide the capacity required to analyse swab samples at scale. As well as manually testing samples with an army of volunteer scientists, we have also developed a wholly automated process, with liquid handling robots and other kit and machinery now filling our laboratories. As a result, we are now testing tens of thousands of samples each day.
The Opportunity
A new role has been created in Milton Keynes for an experienced commercial lawyer to advise on a range of matters primarily focused on procurement and commercial contract drafting, employment and data protection.
You will form part of the wider UK Biobank legal team contributing to something transformational on an international platform.
Applications are invited from lawyers with experience in commercial contracts from commerce and industry and private practice although in house experience is essential.
To succeed in the role, you must be able to draft clearly and precisely, think commercially, evaluate risk and offer sound business judgement. Any experience you have of public procurement work would be advantageous.
As part of UK Biocentre, and in collaboration with the wider UK Biobank legal team, you will see yourself working alongside a dedicated, highly-skilled group of people who are continuing to build a powerful resource for health research.
In return for your commitment, UK Biocentre offers a competitive salary, very flexible working, including the ability to continue to work from home after ‘lockdown’, and a generous pension scheme.
This recruitment assignment is being handled exclusively by our retained consultants, Florit Legal, and all direct or third-party applications will be forwarded to them for consideration.
