Experience:                 

Seasoned lawyer with top notch international corporate legal experience. Requiring a background in one or more of the following areas, with broader experience preferable: transactional/commercial negotiation and drafting, corporate law issues, and legal compliance. Experience working in the fields of payments, broader financial services, technology or B2B is preferable. Management experience is a pre-requisite. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, detail-oriented and confident individual, able to manage a large and diverse workload and interact comfortably and convincingly with all levels of management within the company.

Role Overview

EVO is seeking a General Counsel for its European operations, reporting directly to both EVO’s President – International, and EVP & General Counsel.  The individual assuming this role will be responsible for legal, regulatory and certain compliance functions across the EU, including managing an existing team of professionals.

This is an autonomous senior legal role, which provides expert legal, regulatory and compliance support to both EVO’s European senior leadership team and the company’s General Counsel.

• Overseeing all legal, regulatory and compliance matters relating to the company’s European growth strategy, including supporting M&A initiatives, existing key financial institution joint venture partnerships, and entry into new markets.
• Assist and support the commercial teams in each market on contracting and procurement issues.
• Support and manage areas of compliance and risk, including data privacy, PCI, card network rules, and anti-corruption.
• Maintain the company’s authorised payments institution licenses under the European Payment Services Directive.
• Manage the company’s regulatory applications and approvals in Europe, including ongoing financial regulatory reporting and submissions in connection with financial intuition joint venture partnerships and transactions.
• Manage complex, long-term, multi-functional projects and workstreams and establish processes for tracking milestones and key deliverables and identifying weak points.
• Escalate key areas of risk and issues to senior leadership in Europe and the United States.
• Establish strong relationships with key management of EVO’s European businesses, including advising and supporting the management boards of the businesses.
• Maintain a close relationship with European offices and staff through frequent travel.
• Oversee selection of, and maintain relationships with, outside counsel in Europe.
• Act as the company’s Data Protection Officer (DPO) under the GDPR.
• Establish and oversee Legal budget for ongoing European activities

Key Skills and Experience Required:

• Experience working in the fields of payments, broader financial services, technology or B2B is preferable

• Personable and able to build and maintain key internal and external relationships.
• Experienced working within a dynamic, flexible and fast-paced environment with a strong work ethic.
• Ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership and direct reports that are located in disparate locations.
• Demonstrated ability to be proactive without direct supervision.
• Sound decision-making skills and judgement.
