Why you should join us

At Highways England, safety is our number one priority. It is one of our core values, as well as a behaviour we expect from our people.

Our vision is that everyone who uses our roads, as well as those who work for us, get home, safe and well. Our Home Safe and Well approach sets out our commitments and how our employees can contribute.

Working for us, you’ll recognise the behaviours required to achieve our vision, and help create a fair and just culture for us all. You should be able to fully understand the hazards and risks that are involved in your work, and follow our procedures safely.

Company

Who We Are

We are responsible for England’s motorways and major A roads. We are the backbone of businesses and communities up and down the country.

Our roads make up less than 3% of the length of England’s total road network. Yet they carry one third of all traffic, and two thirds of all freight. Many businesses rely on our roads, and nine out of ten of them are located less than 15km from our network. Whether it’s the daily commute or delivering to deadlines, the nation’s economy - and its people - depend on our work.

£15 billion will be invested by March 2020 to make our roads safer and smarter. Delivering this scale of road investment is unlike anything we've seen in a generation, and everyone here has a role to play in realising our plans.

Individually, we are engineers, project managers, analysts, planners, and more. We are skilled professionals, experts in risk, finance, efficiency, technology and more. We are leaders, thinkers and doers. Together, we are the road.

Equality And Diversity

At Highways England, we celebrate diversity. We make the most of our differences because they make us stronger.

Every one of us has a unique perspective, shaped by factors such as our background, education, gender, culture, race, age, sexual orientation, religion or beliefs, and disability.

As an organisation, we spend millions of pounds to deliver a road network used by millions of different people. So it’s vital we make decisions that reflect those diverse needs, and build an inclusive organisation. By recruiting, developing and retaining diverse talents, we perform better in every way, for everyone.

Our Locations

Whatever your role, there's a place for you in one of our eight sites across the country.

We have offices in:

  • Bedford
  • Birmingham - home to the National Traffic Operations Centre.
  • Bristol
  • Exeter
  • Guildford
  • Leeds
  • Manchester

Your Future

Delivering these ambitious plans calls for us to invest in talented people, as well as projects. Our people are essential to the roads of tomorrow.

A career with Highways England has a professional legacy built in. You'll help to deliver substantial and lasting benefits to the nation.

Our Culture

Everyone here knows our three imperatives: health and safety, customer service and delivery. They inform how we transform our roads. What we do is important, and how we do it is just as important. So we've taken care to embed a culture that empowers all of us.

Our values

We are proud of our five core values. They are our guiding principles, the standards that guide everything we do, both as individuals and together. By living them every day, we will do the best we can for everyone who relies on England’s motorways and major A roads.
