The Alan Turing Institute, as the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence (AI), plays an important part in driving forward advances in these technologies in order to change the world for the better.

There has never been a more significant time to work in data science and AI. There is recognition of the importance of these technologies to our economic and social future: the so-called fourth industrial revolution. The technical challenge of keeping our data secure and private has grown in its urgency and importance. At the same time, voices from academia, industry, and government are coming together to debate how these technologies should be governed and managed.

After launching in 2015 with government funding from EPSRC and five founding universities, the Institute has grown an extensive network of university partners from across the UK and launched a number of major partnerships with industry, public and third sector. Today it is home to more than 400 researchers and a talented business team.

We are recruiting a Commercial DP Lawyer to join the small in-house legal team based at The Alan Turing Institute located at the British Library in the heart of the Knowledge Quarter cluster of London and easy reach of Kings Cross, St Pancras and Euston. Reporting to the General Counsel, this is a new role leading on Data Protection for the Institute in addition to providing a range of legal services including the legal review of contracts, licences and ad hoc agreements.

You will be a Qualified Lawyer (Solicitor or Barrister) in England & Wales with a current practicing certificate; or if qualified in common law jurisdiction you will be undertaking (or about to) your QLTS; you will have relevant PQE at a law firm with some in-house experience too,  or already be working in-house seeking a career move.  You may be a Commercial Lawyer who has specialised in Data Protection, or you may already be working  as a specialist in Data Protection with the ambition of becoming DPO. Your portfolio will also demonstrate all-round legal experience with proven ability to provide practical, outcome-focused legal advice and support. Understanding of or interest in AI, data science and innovation would be an advantage. Charity sector experience is beneficial but not essential. We seek a pragmatic and non-hierarchical team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the professional confidence to build relationships and engage with stakeholders internally and externally.

We offer a competitive salary and excellent benefits package including pension, private health (incl. dental & optical), discretionary bonus, 30 days paid annual leave plus Bank Holidays. The role is office based and we operate flexible working around our core hours of 9.30am-4.30pm, with a 36-hour week.  For more information about The Alan Turing Institute visit www.turing.ac.uk
