If you are looking at returning to the legal profession following an extended break (minimum of 2 years’ break), our Returners Programme offers an exciting opportunity for competition/consumer lawyers to refresh their knowledge and skills.
The CMA is the UK’s world-leading government body which promotes competition for the benefit of consumers, both within and outside the UK, to make markets work well for consumers, businesses and the economy. Our 6-month returnship will provide you with the chance to refresh your experience in competition or consumer law (including litigation) and gain an insight into new areas of interest.
As a Legal Officer, you will support CMA lawyers on a variety of cases and projects, ensuring that decisions taken are legally robust, and that case teams are aware of legal and policy risks. You may be involved in competition law enforcement, consumer law enforcement, merger control, market studies and investigations, and regulatory appeals.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- completing legal research and providing high quality, clear and timely advice in relation to casework, policy and other projects.
- preparing and reviewing documents.
- identifying and analysing evidence and participating in any litigation challenges to the CMA’s work.
You will, primarily, focus on one project but could over time have the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of projects across the CMA portfolio.
If you are a fully qualified lawyer entitled to practice in the UK (including those who have passed the QLTS) with significant prior knowledge and experience in competition law, consumer law, regulatory law or related litigation and are returning from an extended career break of approximately 2 years or more we would be delighted to hear from you.
Whilst this position is offered for a fixed term of six months, you will be able to apply for available permanent positions after the completion of the returnship.

The CMA is an accredited Disability Confident Employer and are Stonewall Diversity Champions. As an equal opportunities employer, we welcome suitably qualified applicants from all backgrounds and recruit by merit on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles.
