Assistant Legal Directors (Litigation)

Location: London

Salary: G6: £68,936 - £77,300 (depending on experience)

We’re looking for a number of lawyers to join our Litigation Group within the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) Legal Service.  With markets changing fast, and the prospect of legal change related to the EU exit, this is an exciting time to join us.

The work of the CMA benefits the lives of everyone in the UK and offers a varied and exciting professional opportunity. Our work is complex, novel and often in the public eye.

Our litigation lawyers are at the heart of the CMA Legal Service and act for the CMA in all its civil litigation in the Competition Appeal Tribunal, High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. Successful applicants will conduct litigation in a wide range of courts and tribunals focusing on competition, consumer and related public law litigation. They will also provide advice on litigation risk to decision makers across the CMA.

Assistant Legal Directors will lead in the day to day conduct and management of CMA litigation casework and projects, help decision makers across the CMA identify litigation risk in their inquiries and decision making and will manage, coach and motivate other team members.

You will need solid experience in the Competition Appeal Tribunal and/or High Court (or similar courts or tribunals in other jurisdictions), the ability to work under pressure, persuasive communication and analytical skills, flexibility and a willingness to work across the organisation. We need good team players who will help to develop the CMA’s litigation team and who will contribute to the work of CMA Legal across the board. Significant experience reviewing and preparing evidence and providing advice on litigation risk to both technical and non-technical audiences and experience of competition law and/or competition litigation is an advantage and successful candidates will need to show a grasp of public law at interview.

The CMA offers a generous annual leave allowance of 25 days per year that increases to 30 days after 5 years’ service. In addition, the CMA offers generous policies for maternity and paternity leave, parental leave and special leave in the event of domestic emergencies.

If you want to gain valuable skills and experience working on varied and interesting cases and make a difference to people’s lives, then we encourage you to apply to work with us. Joining us now as we work on our next phase of transformation will offer uniquely rewarding professional opportunities.

We will consider applications from candidates wishing to join permanently, as well as from those looking for a fixed term contract. Suitably qualified candidates will be considered regardless of background.

Candidates who do not hold UK fully qualified lawyer status entitling them to practice in England and Wales must be prepared to sit and pass the QLTS on appointment.
