Ofgem is committed to making a positive difference for energy consumers through effective regulation of the market and close working with suppliers to ensure sustainable energy for consumers and businesses in the UK.
The energy sector is changing fast, and scrutiny and regulation around environmental sustainability, energy costs and customer care remain high profile and evolving topics. In turn this leads to ongoing reviews of policy and initiatives, and it’s essential that sound legal advice supports decision making in such a dynamic setting.
So a legal career in Ofgem presents an incredibly diverse array of opportunities. You could find yourself advising on policy development, the implementation of regulatory policy and environmental schemes, enforcing regulatory requirements and defending challenges to this, negotiating settlements or supporting fraud investigations. It’s your opportunity to bring your professional expertise to bear on a universal service – something that impacts every individual and every business on the country.
As a Principal Legal Adviser you’ll take lead responsibility for a portfolio of work, managing a legal team to advise on a range of public law issues in a regulatory context. You’ll ensure that resources within the team are effectively aligned to meet requirements, and play a key role in quality assuring the work of the team and supporting the professional development of colleagues. You’ll also have a key role to play in managing key stakeholder relationships, including with industry, BEIS and the CMA.
We expect you’ll have considerable PQE experience in at least one of the following: public and administrative law; energy law and regulation; competition law; or complex project / procurement work. Your technical expertise should be enhanced by strengths in people and project management, and you should offer the professional and personal credibility to build strong professional relationships within and beyond your own organisation.
Ofgem can offer you a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes:
• Up to 30 days’ annual leave
• Excellent training and development opportunities
• The opportunity to join the Civil Service pension arrangements, which include a valuable range of benefits
• Flexible working hours and family friendly policies
• Restaurant (London only) and subsidised gym
• Interest free season ticket loan
• Rental deposit scheme
• Perkbox (staff discount scheme)
• Employee Wellbeing Programme.
