University of the Arts London (UAL) is ranked 2nd in the world for Art and Design according to the 2019 QS World University Rankings®. It is Europe’s largest specialist art and design university, with over 19,000 students from more than 130 countries. Its activities are vast and match its international reputation.
The Legal Services team at UAL is a central service team located in Kings Cross in Central St Martins, close to the student activity. The team provides a full range of legal services and advice across the university as well as its group companies on a wide range of commercial matters.
We have a mandate for a junior In House Counsel to join a growing Legal team. This is an exciting opportunity for a junior commercial contracts lawyer, with up to 3 years’ experience in house or in private practice, to join an established and busy in house team in the university education sector.
Candidates will need broad commercial contracts experience and a keen interest in general corporate commercial and Intellectual Property matters. The purpose of the role is to assist the legal team in providing high quality tailored legal services across the University on a range of commercial, enterprise, academic, research and development, knowledge exchange and student matters.
The role will involve, not exclusively:
- Reviewing and drafting contracts across a broad range of projects;
- Conveying highly technical information in a clear way;
- Assisting with the creation of precedents and establishing know how;
- The maintaining of standards and developing best practice;
- Training colleagues;
- Instruction and supervision of external lawyers;
You will require excellent drafting skills, great people skills and a keen understanding of the law and ability to apply it in proportion to the activity and need on a risk assessed basis.
UAL offers a happy work/life balance, a great and robust legal team to work with and a favourable working environment. Attractive holiday entitlement and a generous pension scheme are on offer.
