In a market where differentiation is often subtle, this US firm has made its mark in London through the careful recruitment of city lawyers. The culture is very supportive and the lawyers at the firm have created a brand which has found its niche in the London market. This strategy has been led from the top. The London managing partner works closely with the US management. The CEO and other key US lawyers are regularly in London. The London managing partner is ‘personally invested’ in the office’s continued success, having provided the plan and energy to transform the office over the last five years. This has resulted in all the firm’s practice areas now being ranked in the directories and each providing meaningful support to the firm’s US clients operating in Europe. The next stage of growth is enhancing the office by making two key leadership hires and one of these is recruiting a Head of Corporate in London/EMEA.
There are currently three corporate partners in London, all lateral hires from leading international firms. They are a young and dynamic team and recognise the benefit of a leader to galvanise and drive the practice. This strategy has worked very well in another practice area: the firm recruited a market leader to lead a team of five partners which has been very successful.
The firm has never just looked at business case but how an individual’s practice will integrate within the firm on a sector basis. During the very collaborative business planning process the firm will focus on how the clients will benefit from a move to the firm. The firm has historically presented a compelling story for laterals clients: platform, brand, rate flexibility and real access to the US market. The London office has a strong brand in financial services (funds, trading businesses, commodities, securities, brokerage and banking), real estate (particularly the globally recognised hotels practice) and increasingly high net worth individuals and family offices. Client relationships in those sectors will work well and the brand should be an easy sell to your clients. The business case for an equity appointment is £1.2 million plus.
This is quite a unique opportunity at a leading firm. This is a strategic hire and the level of an offer will reflect that.
