British Council are recruiting a Senior Legal Adviser to join the small in-house legal team currently based at Corporate HQ in central London. Reporting to the Head of Legal, you will support the global organisation working as a designated business partner to the English & Exams (E&E) business, which is one of the three strategic business units of the British Council.   To learn more about the E&E business visit www.britishcouncil.org.

This is a truly global organisation operating with a matrix structure.  The in-house Legal team focus on business-critical strategic legal issues, including co-creation partnerships, joint ventures, cross border issues, legal status, oversight of major contracts and strategy for major dispute resolution. Legal advice for transactional issues is managed by an outsourced arrangement. Globally, legal support is available via overseas lawyers as required. Key interfaces will be many - internal and external, UK and overseas - supporting effective governance and risk management internationally. 

Your career to date may initially have been as a barrister/lawyer/solicitor in private practise; for this role we also require you to have spent time in-house. A Lawyer qualified in common law jurisdiction your post-qualification portfolio will demonstrate all-round legal experience including knowledge of:

  • Partnerships, Mergers and Joint Ventures
  • Corporate law and governance
  • Legal Status (UK & overseas)
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Contracts
  • Conflict of laws/cross border issues
  • International legal experience
  • Commercial / Corporate

Public/NDPB; charity and/or professional service sector experience is beneficial but not essential. You will have successfully operated as a team player in a culturally diverse organisation going through a period of change.  As a proficient project manager with strong commercial and analytical thinking, you will demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills.  You will have empathy with the vision and purpose of British Council.
