HEAD OF LEGAL

Our client is a world-famous research institute, who are genuine pioneers in data science and artificial intelligence.  Collaborating with university partners, industry, public and third sector organisations, they undertake projects that demonstrate significant impact in both the wider world and academia. At the heart of the institute is a commercial business team which facilitates, supports and enhances all research activities.  The Head of Legal will head up the legal and compliance function and be an active member of the leadership team, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer.

THE ROLE

This is a brand-new role, and it is an opportunity for someone to genuinely shape the legal function, and set and execute its strategy within a hugely vibrant, ambitious and dynamic environment.

You will provide comprehensive legal and commercial advice to ensure the institute operates optimally and complies with legal obligations. You will be expected to contribute to the institute’s wider decision-making processes whilst implementing, directing and managing all facets of the function.

At a time of rapid growth, the successful candidate will manage a significant number of diverse projects, working with internal clients and external stakeholders

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and implementation of a streamlined end-to-end model for all legal and governance processes
  • Negotiation, generation and custody of research and commercial contracts including complex and multi-faceted funding and grant agreements with commercial, public and third sector partners
  • Risk management, compliance and governance accountability, including GDPR
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for third party legal advisors as needed and management of this budget
  • Leading as contractual subject matter expert on partner negotiations, including the review and drafting of non-standard terms where needed
  • Manage the institute’s Intellectual Property policy, ensuring compliance and evolving it through stakeholder engagement and sign off through appropriate governance bodies.

ABOUT YOU

The perfect candidate will have high energy levels, ambition and obvious gravitas to feel at home in this highly dynamic environment. Proactive and highly motivated, additionally you will have the following skills and experience:

Essential

  • A high-quality degree and legal qualification
  • Long standing post qualification experience including solid tenure in a senior role
  • Corporate / transactional legal experience
  • Understanding of basic principles of charity law
  • Numerate with aptitude for commercial considerations

Desirable

  • Experience in an academic, research or charity environment highly desirable
  • Working knowledge of procurement and State Aid rules
