Director of Legal Services

They are now looking for an experienced senior commercial lawyer and leader to provide proactive, timely and well-informed legal advice. You’ll cover corporate matters and law that impacts or may impact the University, including student related matters (but excluding employment law which will be managed by HR).  
You will manage the contracts team in addition to the management of non-direct reports through a matrix structure. You will be responsible for the provision of advice and support of all contracts with 3rd parties of substantial value or strategic importance, including commercial agreements, strategic arrangements or academic arrangements. You will also be required to provide solution orientated legal advice including the interpretation of risk, property and commercial related matters at all levels, as well as IP, maintaining and developing the University’s trademark and domain name portfolio, all litigation and training and development. 
Reporting into the Registrar, the successful candidate will be qualified, experienced, practicing solicitor with demonstrable experience of successfully delivering timely and accurate advice at a senior level with both a domestic and international focus. You will have experience translating strategy into an effective legal strategy and interpreting legislation, training and communicating legal requirements and procedures. You don’t need to come from the Higher Education sector however you will be expected to have knowledge of the regulatory and legal framework within Higher Education and the issues affecting it. You must also be able to successfully manage budgets and staff teams which are responsive, efficient and agile and develop and sustain effective working relationships with a range of internal and external contacts and networks.
