About us

Since opening our London office in January 2010, we have assembled a fully integrated team built around bank/bond financing, asset management, private investment funds, private equity, real estate, special situations, business & securities litigation, IP transactions, antitrust and tax. The bespoke London office compliments our firm's traditional core strengths - private equity and funds, while retaining the flexibility to identify and react to any future market needs. With a focus on sophisticated investors our firm’s work involves complex cross-border transactions, requiring our lawyers to have an in-depth understanding of the legal and business requirements of multiple jurisdictions.

High-quality international transfers and lateral recruits make up the London team, which collectively speaks over 38 languages and represents 28 nationalities. We are market insiders with a strong reputation within the UK and European business community and we have longstanding relationships with leading local firms in all major European and Asian jurisdictions.

Representative clients include: Altice, Bain Capital, BlackRock, Blackstone, CVC Credit Partners, GoldenTree Asset Management, Highbridge, JPMorgan, Liberty Global, MezzVest, Morgan Stanley, Nordic Capital, Partners Group, Sankaty Advisors, Smedvig Capital, TPG, Virgin Media and Vision Capital.

We have been recognised in the London market by Legal Business, which honoured our London office with the “2013 and 2015 U.S. Law Firm of the Year” award and by Legal Week where we were a finalist for “London office of the Year”. We have also earned a "Deal of the Year" award in 2014 from International Financial Law Review for our work with Liberty Global on the Virgin Media acquisition.  Additionally, we were ranked number one by deal count for Euromarket High-Yield (excluding Emerging Markets) Issuer Adviser in Bloomberg's 2012 Global Legal Adviser League Tables.

We were ranked number one for formal training in the 2016 Vault guide released in July 2015, marking it the fifth year in a row that the firm has earned the top spot in this category. The firm also ranked number one for firm culture and was ranked second among U.S. firms for “Best Law Firm to Work For,” a defining category in which the firm has ranked first or second in the country each of the past seven years.

Who should apply?

We are looking for people with an entrepreneurial approach to dealing with clients and business development. Direct client contact is taken for granted, and not just at senior levels - all our lawyers are encouraged and supported in playing their own part in active business development. This is balanced by an open door policy ensuring candidates will have the support to build a successful career. Candidates who understand and identify with our culture, and excel in our core qualities such as collaboration, openness and commerciality will also have a natural advantage.

Training programme

The training contract in London is comprised of four six-month seats, rotating between practice groups and progress is reviewed every three months. We currently offer seats in antitrust, asset management, business & securities litigation, finance - high yield, finance - banking, government enforcement, intellectual property transactions, private investment funds, private equity, real estate, special situations and tax. We also offer an international seat in the finance team of our Hong Kong office. All trainees currently attend the University of Law trainee litigation programme.

We aim to distinguish our trainee programme by ensuring that our trainees receive the best training available to enable them to demonstrate that they are of the right quality to be offered jobs upon qualification and to then progress and develop their careers within the firm. While some of our trainees have read law at university, we welcome graduates from every discipline. The "best training available" in this context means both the formal training provided as part of the Professional Skills Course, in seminars, workshops and lectures together with practical hands-on training overseen by a supervising partner or senior associate. The small number of trainees in the firm enables us to ensure that trainees are offered early responsibility and challenging work, assisting with a variety of tasks on a range of transactions.

We provide continuous support for our trainees over their two-year contract, making sure that their given a dedicated HR contact who will deal with any personnel matters and ensure that their training and development needs are met.

When it comes to qualification, if you make the grade and would like to stay on with us, we'll make every effort to find the right place for you.

When and how to apply

All candidates need to apply via our online application form via the Apply now button. The deadline for our vacation schemes is 31 January 2017 and 31 July 2017 for training contract applications – please note that our training contract application form will be live from February 2017.

Work placements

Each year we have up to eight places on each of our two-week vacation schemes which run in April and July. These give a fantastic opportunity to experience the culture of the firm and the type of work we do. Students take part in a broad range of activities, including firm wide networking drinks, an interview and application form skills session and completing practice group work. We also ensure that the scheme develops tangible skills, for example our negotiation exercise is based on a confidentiality contract negotiation which is an everyday activity for our trainees. Of course, the students also complete a number of formal assessments which run throughout the two weeks. During the course of the scheme we ensure that the students interact with as many different individuals as possible so they can build an overall impression of the firm and what it is like to train here.
