The Bar Council has confirmed that pupillage application system Pupillage Gateway will not move to January as previously planned.

In previous years, the Gateway was accessible to view during March, with the window for pupillage applications open during the month of April.

However, earlier this year the Bar Council made the decision to move the application period to January for 2016. It then had second thoughts and asked students for their views on the date change in a consultation.

A spokesperson for the Bar Council has now confirmed that to Lawyer 2B that there will be no change to the system in 2016, meaning the Gateway will run through April as in prior years. The Bar Council will analyse the results of the consultation and if it does decide to make a change, “it will be at least a year until it is properly implemented,” the spokesperson said.

The number of Pupillage Gateway applications fell by 8.8 per cent in 2015.
