Our client is a global, multi-award winning media company with a number of imaginative brands. It curates some of the best commissions in the market, makes high-profile acquisitions and attracts the very best of content, in addition to embracing technology to deliver inspired channels to audiences through multi-platforms.
The Legal and Business Affairs team responsibilities are primarily for programme related work but it also deals with other business requirements. A 12 month maternity cover role exists for a media lawyer with content acquisition, distribution and commissioning experience to join this busy team.
Key Responsibilities:
To work primarily (but not necessarily exclusively) on project managing and ensuring completion of contracts relating to acquired programming, and all associated matters, including programme related marketing activities.
To be the key contact in Legal and Business Affairs team for acquired programming queries.
To contribute to improving, maintaining and updating policy, process and templates both within the team and the wider business.
To maintain and demonstrate expertise in all relevant fields of law and industry agreements including collective licensing and bargaining agreements.
To lead, motivate and manage direct reports, taking responsibility for supporting, supervising and training more junior reports
Knowledge, skills & experience:
Demonstrable Acquired programme licencing knowledge & expertise to the level expected from a minimum of 3 years relevant programme licensing experience, including US studio and other complex programme licensing templates .
Recent experience (within the last three years) of working in a significant media organisation.
Experience of line management of junior lawyers and/or paralegals.
Ability to lead complex negotiations and to understand and draft complex and intellectually challenging agreements.
You will be a lawyer with a minimum of 5 years PQE, including a period of at least 12 months PQE in a media or entertainment biased private practice. Knowledge of the following is essential: Communication Act 2003, Ofcom Codes and other forms of broadcast/media regulation; PRS/MCPS, PPL and other blanket music licences; Equity, WGGB, MU and other collective talent union agreements; IP law, contract law, defamation and other media law; the various forms of digital communication technology and issues/challenges these present; experience in the TV industry; current terms of trade relating to UK independent production and other relevant industry standard terms.
You will have first class project management and problem-solving skills. In addition, you will be an able draftsman and negotiator with demonstrable exposure to acquisition agreements, complex co-financed productions , including pre-sale programme acquisitions and other forms of film or TV deficit financing. Experience of programme production and commissioning agreements would be desirable.
