Upcoming NQ solicitors should consider the Channel Islands as a viable alternative to the City, as firms in this offshore jurisdiction are continuing to actively recruit into their core practice areas of finance and corporate.
Offshore firms play a crucial role in the global legal framework, offering specialist advice to corporates and individuals where transactions involve an offshore element.
Banking and finance associates based in Jersey typically have a far broader remit than their City counterparts, advising on all manner of transactions including structured finance and securitisations, debt capital markets, capital raisings, property finance, asset finance, leveraged finance and more specialist offshore services such as cash box structures.
Likewise, offshore corporate associates also generally have an extremely wide ranging practice. Associates in this practice area work on all manner of domestic and international acquisitions, mergers, disposals, restructurings, joint ventures, company structuring, commercial contracts and private equity investments.
Firms in Jersey are able to offer high quality work and training to junior associates, and pay at a competitive rate that, after tax, compares favourably to a standard City salary. The lifestyle in Jersey law firms is also generally far more relaxed than you would find in the City, so there are several clear reasons to make the move offshore.
The leading players in the offshore market are actively recruiting newly qualified City trained lawyers into their core banking and corporate practices. NQs who have completed seats in corporate, commercial and/or banking and finance in their training contract will be of interest, although they must have trained at a top 20, preferably top 10, City firm. Excellent academics are also required.
