Commercial / IP Lawyer - 1-2 years PQE - Central London
A fantastic permanent position has arisen at a media company for a junior lawyer looking to develop their career in-house.
The role will be responsible for providing advice to the business in respect of its commercial relationships, including on issues relating to copyright and other rights. The successful candidate will assist and work alongside more senior, experienced lawyers but will also be expected to develop strong relationships with internal clients.
Main responsibilities include:
- Assisting and advising the business in the negotiation (and drafting) of various types of commercial agreements, especially licensing schemes, terms and conditions and bespoke licences.
- Advising the business on copyright issues and to a lesser extent, other types of IP.
- Providing legal advice to the business in respect of other commercial relationships, including IT outsourcing and software licensing, marketing and advertising, membership contractual issues, confidentiality and other contractual matters.
- Advising the business on fairness and reasonableness of licence and scheme commercial terms, issues concerning discrimination and on risks of a Copyright Tribunal reference.
- Instructing and liaising with external solicitors and counsel as appropriate.
- Monitoring and keeping abreast of relevant legal developments in the UK and internationally. To provide updates to other members of the legal team on important developments in relevant law and, where appropriate, provide formal and informal training to clients.
The successful candidate will be a qualified solicitor with strong drafting skills, an excellent academic record and a keen interest in Intellectual Property. The role would suit someone at the 1-2PQE* level who is currently in a commercial or IP team (or possibly competition/corporate) in a highly regarded law firm and who is looking to progress their career in-house. Whilst experience of commercial contracts and copyright is highly advantageous, candidates from other practice areas who can demonstrate a genuine interest in these areas are also encouraged to apply.
This is an exciting and challenging position, dealing with complex legal issues in a rapidly changing legal landscape at the heart of the media sector. A sharp mind, a willingness to learn and strong inter-personal skills are essential in order to succeed in this role.

*PQE is just a guide and those who are able to demonstrate the core competencies are still encouraged to apply
