SUMMARY OF DEPT:
The European Product Development team with is responsible for developing, in partnership with multiple functions, J.P. Morgan Asset Management's European-domiciled fund ranges which comprise more than 13 umbrella structures, 250 funds, and more than 1,600 active share classes, with AUM in excess of $290 billion. Current product development activity is focused mainly on:
- Luxembourg SICAVs and FCPs (UCITS, Part II and SIFs), which are registered in 30 countries globally; and
- UK OEICs (UCITS and NURS), Life funds and charity funds.
European Product Development is structured into four core areas:
- Strategic initiatives and product line management
- Product Development with dedicated teams focused on specific asset classes
- Product Management focusing on non-specific fund initiatives and regulatory change, and Documentation Management.
Overview of the role
Product Documentation Specialists are an integral part of the European Product Development team and are responsible for providing legal and drafting support in respect of the establishment and ongoing maintenance of the European-domiciled fund complex. Product Documentation Specialists are typically aligned to specific asset class teams within European Product Development. They work closely with product developers, investment teams and subject matter experts across the business in creating legal and regulatory documentation for fund activities.
The incumbent should have a keen interest in developments within the European asset management industry. Through their role they will gain in-depth understanding of the UK and European cross-border asset management landscape and will develop extensive knowledge of investment instruments and portfolio management processes and techniques.
Main responsibilities and duties
The key activities of the Product Documentation Specialist are given below.
- Working in full partnership with the product developers to ensure regulatory and documentation issues are addressed in the design and execution of new products in a way that helps ensure J.P. Morgan has market leading documentation
- Providing advice and assistance on regulatory issues with the creation of new products, material product changes, mergers and liquidations
- Thinking laterally and globally on the possible impact of product changes to different areas of the business; communicating to all to create involvement and dialogue
- Drafting and project managing the review of product legal/regulatory documentation from specification to regulatory approval. This entails internal co-ordination with other business functions, sometimes across Europe, to ensure the products meet appropriate J.P. Morgan and regulatory standards
- Liaising with external lawyers and the Depositary/Trustee of UK OEIC and Charity funds
- Supporting the application for regulatory approval of prospectus changes and new funds by working as necessary with relevant Documentation Managers
- Thinking and communicating laterally and globally on the possible impact of product changes to different areas of the business thus creating involvement and dialogue
- Developing and maintaining relationships with particularly the asset class investment desk(s) together with risk and compliance departments, internal and external legal counsel, marketing and distribution.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
- Client focused - Client centric mindset with a commitment to integrity, fairness and responsibility.
- Previous employers and roles - Experience in the asset management industry directly or through the asset management practices of law/consultancy firms, with particular experience in working in the UCITS regulatory framework.
- Technical knowledge - Good technical knowledge of the UCITS environment, in particular in respect of UCITS products which use derivative for investment purposes; Knowledge of non UCITS structures including SIFs, NURs and Life funds; Experiencing of the documentation requirements of registering UCITS in Asian jurisdictions
- Investment knowledge - Broad understanding of instruments used in funds; understanding of portfolio management process and techniques
- Relationship management - Ability to develop partnerships with key business partners, including investment desks, compliance, risk, tax, operations, and internal and external legal counsel; credibility and proven ability to engage with stakeholders across the business at all levels. This should include influencing and interpersonal skills
- Project management - Experience of working to tight deadlines
- Communication - Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to articulate complex ideas, concepts, and solutions at a level appropriate which are intelligible to the recipient
- Qualifications - A qualified lawyer or experienced para-legal or equivalent.
