Jones Day Training: What's the Difference?
The Firm
Jones Day is a truly global law firm – probably the most integrated in the world. Our 2,500 lawyers across 44 locations in major business and finance centres worldwide have vast transactional and contentious experience and are at the forefront of globalisation and the advancement of the rule of law. Our strengths in London reflect those of the Firm: our 220 lawyers (including around 60 partners and 40 trainees) have a sophisticated understanding of risk and draw on specialist insights and skills from across the globe to guide clients through their toughest challenges.
Types of work
London’s critical financial centre is a magnet for multi-jurisdictional transactions and disputes which rely on English Law for their documentation and resolution. Our London lawyers are perfectly placed to address the most demanding and complex matters across the globe: including cross-border M&A; real estate and finance transactions (including banking, capital markets, investment funds, private equity and structured finance); global disputes; and regulatory matters involving the UK, US and other authorities. Additional specialist areas include business restructuring; competition/antitrust; corporate criminal investigations; corporate tax planning; energy; employment and pensions; intellectual property; and projects and infrastructure.
Who should apply
We look for people who are committed to a legal career; want to work on global deals; and want to become partners of the future – not just to qualify with us. Around half our London partners trained with the Firm. Successful candidates have a minimum 2.1 degree in any discipline and AAA/36 at A-level/IB. Your degree need not be a law degree. Around 60% of our current trainees have non-law degrees. Postgraduates and career changers may also apply. Around 30% of our trainees were graduates/postgraduates when they applied to us. You will need strong intellectual and analytical ability, good communication skills, and be able to demonstrate resourcefulness, drive and dedication.
Training programme
The Firm operates a unique, non-rotational training system (whereby trainees receive work simultaneously from all departments) to provide flexibility, responsibility, faster development of potential and the opportunity to compare and contrast different disciplines alongside one another. As our trainees do not move department every six months, they don’t miss the end of deals or trials they have worked on. Work will vary from small cases which trainees may handle alone (under the supervision of a senior lawyer) to larger matters where they will assist a partner or an associate solicitor. The Firm runs a structured seminar programme to support the practical teaching trainees receive from associates and partners they work with.
Trainee Salaries
These reflect the importance Jones Day attaches to the trainee role as well as the trainees' contribution to the Firm’s business. Current salary rates (for indicative purposes and subject to changes or increases in line with the Firm’s annual review policy) are shown opposite.
When to apply
Each year, we provide two-week placements for 72 candidates and pay them an allowance of £400 per week. Apply for a placement if you want to train at Jones Day. We mainly recruit our trainees from our placement candidates who see how the Firm’s non-rotational training system works in practice by taking on real work from a variety of practice areas. All our placement schemes are open to final year students, graduates, postgraduates and career changers. Our schemes are also open to penultimate year students undertaking a qualifying UK law degree.
We open applications for our 2016/17 placement schemes on 1 September 2016. Whilst we will then be recruiting for training contracts with start dates for September 2019, we may see fit to recruit into intakes with earlier start dates if places are available and suitable candidates are identified who can start sooner. We recruit on a rolling basis so cannot guarantee availability. Final deadlines are 28 October 2016 (Winter scheme); 16 December 2016 (Spring scheme); 13 January 2017 (Summer scheme).
