Further information

The Crown Estate has re-appointed Burges Salmon to its legal panel for the Rural Portfolio & Windsor Estate and as a result, we are looking to grow our Real Estate team, by recruiting a lawyer with an interest in rural property law.

Team

The rural property team is known for experience across a broad range of areas, including expertise in working with landed estates regarding tax, trusts, property and litigation; it is "a very impressive firm in terms of technical expertise." (Chambers)

The core non-contentious agricultural team comprises of 4 lawyers, including Alastair Morrison, acting exclusively on rural sales, purchases and mortgages. Recognised for their sophisticated level of expertise our lawyers regularly deal with all of the major rural land agents throughout the country, advising on issues arising from the sale and purchase of estates and large rural properties. The team acts for significant rural landowners including the National Trust, the Crown Estate, as well as numerous owner/occupiers throughout England and Wales.

Work

The core team's work encompasses all areas of rural life and business, from lifestyle buyers to historic landowners managing estates and well established rural businesses expanding into new projects. We are property lawyers and we also form a key part of the firm's Food, Farming and Land group, which advises food retailers, distributors, processors and producers as well as landowners and farmers.

However, rural property law is wider than just agriculture. Our clients (including The Crown Estate) frequently require advice on commercial and residential property in the rural context.

Requirements

We look for excellent academics, together with evidence of high quality relevant experience. You will be comfortable working with both private clients and corporate/institutional clients and their agents. Detailed knowledge of agricultural property law is not required, as training will be provided. We also value an ability to handle both contentious and non-contentious work.
