Summary of Roles Available
Our Banking Group has a number of opportunities available globally including:

  • Mid-level associate to join the London team
  • Associates at all levels to join the Johannesburg team
  • Mid-level associate to join the Singapore the team
  • Mid/Senior-level associate to join the Sydney team

All the teams are an integrated part of the Firm's Global Finance group of approximately 500 lawyers who cover the world's key financial money centres, many of whom are regularly featured in the top tier of rankings in both Legal 500 and Chambers. We are able to advise sponsors, borrowers, lenders, corporate entities and financial institutions on all aspects of financing transactions – from origination, negotiation and documentation to closing. We also advise clients on enforcement situations, workouts and reorganisations and the full breadth of structured and capital markets offerings. We are noted for our expertise in acquisition finance, securitisation, bank lending, financial regulatory work and project finance, especially advising on cross-border deals, bespoke complex transactions and those involving emerging markets.

Associates are given regular and direct contact with clients, with a culture based on associates being given the level of responsibility they are ready for, rather than a PQE based method of work allocation. Developing relationships with clients including gaining a good knowledge of the client’s businesses, economic drivers, market and sector requirements in order to ensure advice is relevant and commercial is intrinsic to the role.

There are regular opportunities for secondments with clients and posting to other offices under the firm's associate transfer programme is also a possibility.

The successful individuals will be engaging in business development activities and being active in the promotion of the firm and seeking opportunities for new work. In addition, you will be working as part of a team including assisting with the supervision of junior lawyers’ work, and taking an active part in sharing knowledge and experience with the team.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate all or the majority of the following:

  • A qualified lawyer with excellent academics credentials
  • Current experience in the banking department of a leading Firm
  • First rate technical skills needed to support the client work of the department
  • Commerciality and demonstrable business development experience
  • Excellent written communication and drafting skills
  • Initiative and proactivity
  • Maturity and gravitas
  • Strong service orientation - a "client first" culture
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with clients and to take responsibility for this relationship
  • High work standards
  • Flexible work practices
  • Outstanding communication skills and the ability to adapt style as required
  • Ability to work well in both a team and individually
  • A keenness to learn

Diversity and Inclusion
Respects and enjoys the diversity of cultural, social and academic backgrounds found in the Firm.

The Firm
Baker & McKenzie is a truly global law firm. We have more offices in more locations than any other law firm and most of our work has an international dimension. With more than 10,000 people in 46 countries, few other firms can claim to be so multi-national.

Yet big does not mean impersonal. One of the things you'll notice about Baker & McKenzie is our culture. We call it Fluency, which describes how we work, think and behave when we are at our best. Every person in the firm is measured not just on the basis of how they perform but how they perform in this Fluent culture.

And, because we have no global head office, at the local level we can offer you the best of both worlds: the work, pride and experience of being part of one of the world's leading law firms but in a local office environment that is friendly and supportive. No matter what the role or level, our strategy is to encourage and support every Baker & McKenzie person to be the best they can be.

We are also actively committed to serving the community we operate in through numerous corporate social responsibility and diversity initiatives. We place an important emphasis on the development and well being of our people. We look to enable all of our employees to be the best they can be in order for them to deliver an excellent client service.

During more than 50 years in the City of London, Baker & McKenzie has established a very strong platform from which to continue its growth. The London office is the Firm's largest (with more than 400 fee earners) and covers all the practices expected of a major international law firm. Many of these practices are market-leading.

Much of our work is cross-border and our Finance team, in particular, regularly advise on, and co-ordinate, complex, cross-border transactions. We work closely with the rest of our offices around the world.

High profile matters and transactions, coupled with our global reach and capability, have helped Baker & McKenzie to increase its work with the UK's leading businesses. A Chambers Magazine survey recently ranked the Firm among the top 15 advisors to FTSE 100 companies, acting for 11% of them, and more than any other non-UK-origin law firm.

The London Banking team sits within the firm's broader Banking & Finance Practice which comprises over 40 lawyers, including 16 partners, specialising in 15 distinct practice areas that best match the requirements of our global client base.

The success of our culture is supported by a number of awards. We are the only law firm to have won both The Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For 2013 and The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers 2013.

Additionally, we are one of only two law firms in the top 20 of the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index 2014, reflecting our commitment to our progressive values and our collaborative, diverse and inclusive culture. Other accolades include:

Law-Solicitors Award 2013 – Finalist for Most Popular Graduate Recruiter
TARGETjob awards 2013 - Diversity
National Placement and Internship Awards – Finalist for best short term insight scheme
Lex100 – Recommended firm 2013/14
LCN Best Trainer 2013– Large City firm
NCWE 2013 - Finalist legal sector

Each of the Firm's diversity strands includes representation from the London Banking Group.
