Vacation Schemes/Training Contracts

Jones Day is a truly global law firm – probably the most integrated in the world. Our 2,400 lawyers across 40 locations worldwide have vast transactional and contentious experience and are at the forefront of globalisation and the advancement of the rule of law. Our strengths in London reflect those of the Firm: our 200 lawyers (including around 60 partners and 30 trainees) have a sophisticated understanding of risk and draw on specialist insights and skills from across the globe to guide clients through their toughest challenges and most significant, corporate life events.
Types of work
London’s critical financial centre is a magnet for multi-jurisdictional transactions and disputes, which rely on English Law for their documentation and resolution. Our London lawyers are perfectly placed to address the most demanding and complex matters across the globe: including cross-border M&A; real estate and finance transactions (including banking, capital markets, investment funds, private equity and structured finance); global disputes; and regulatory matters involving the UK, US and other authorities. Additional specialist areas include business restructuring; competition/antitrust; corporate tax planning; employment and pensions; energy; intellectual property; and projects and infrastructure.
Who should apply
We look for people who want to work on global deals and be challenged on an international level; and who can become partners of the future. Around half our London partners trained with the Firm. Successful candidates have a minimum 2.1 degree in any discipline and AAA/36 at A-level/IB. You will need strong intellectual ability, good communication skills, and be able to demonstrate resourcefulness, drive and dedication.
The Firm operates a unique, non-rotational training system (whereby trainees receive work simultaneously from all departments) to provide flexibility, responsibility, faster development of potential and the opportunity to compare and contrast different disciplines alongside one another. As our trainees do not move department every six months, they don’t miss the end of deals or trials they have worked on. Work will vary from small cases which trainees may handle alone (under the supervision of a senior lawyer) to larger matters where they will assist a partner or an associate solicitor. The Firm runs a structured seminar programme to support the practical teaching trainees receive from associates and partners they work with.
When to apply
We provide two-week placements for 64 candidates and pay an allowance of £400 per week. Apply for a placement if you want to train at Jones Day. We recruit all trainees from our placement candidates, who see how the Firm’s non-rotational training system works in practice by taking on real work from a variety of practice areas. All our placement schemes are open to final year students, graduates and postgraduates; our Summer schemes are also open to penultimate year students undertaking a qualifying law degree. Applications open early on 1 September 2013. We recruit on a rolling basis so cannot guarantee availability. Final deadlines (unless places fill earlier) are 31 October 2013 (Winter scheme); 31 December 2013 (Spring scheme); 31 January 2014 (Summer scheme)
