Training Contracts and Vacation Schemes

A leading independent City firm with a major corporate and commercial practice. Although less than a quarter of the size of the largest firms, we handle high profile and top quality work, much of which has an international dimension. The work we undertake is exciting, intellectually demanding and top quality, involving blue-chip clients and big numbers. The atmosphere within the firm is good-humoured, social and supportive.
Types of work
The main areas of our practice are Corporate law, commercial law, intellectual property and technology, litigation, investment funds, financial services and markets, banking, corporate recovery, competition, tax, employment, pensions and real estate.
Advising Metro Bank, the first new high street bank in 100 years on its historic launch and subsequent fundraisings; Pinewood studios (the James Bond and Harry Potter film studios) on its takeover and recent China joint venture; YouView on the network of commercial contracts needed for the new TV platform prior to launch; on the recent sale of Tyrrells Crisps; TalkSport on various joint ventures following the securing of certain Premier League broadcast rights; and ongoing advice to LK Bennett, Channel 4, Gaucho, Shazam and Pret a Manger.
The firm has a comprehensive training programme which ensures that trainees experience a broad range of work. There is a refreshing lack of hierarchy, and all trainee solicitors sit in rooms with partners and associates and receive an individual and extensive training from experienced lawyers, enjoying client contact and responsibility from day one.
We offer a range of pro bono opportunities within individual departments and on a firm-wide basis. For example, trainees and associates advise on a voluntary basis at a law centre and an advice clinic. The firm is also a legal partner of A4ID (Advocates for International Development) and we organise numerous fundraising events for a dedicated charity, chosen on an annual basis.
On the social front, the firm fields teams in rugby sevens, five-a-side and 11-a-side football, mixed hockey, softball, cricket, squash and golf against clients and other law firms. The firm has an annual quiz night, Christmas party and there are various other social events (formal and informal) which take place within individual departments.
Who should apply
We look for people who combine academic excellence with common sense; who are articulate, who think on their feet, who are determined and self-motivated and who take their work but not themselves seriously. Applications are welcome from law and non-law undergraduates/graduates.
When and how to apply
By 31 July 2014 for September 2016.
Apply online via our website by clicking on the Apply Now button.
Three summer schemes of two weeks each commencing 23 June, 7 July and 21 July. Apply online by 31 January 2014. The firm also offers a Christmas scheme of two weeks.
Students spend two weeks with the firm; each week in a different department, sharing an office with partners, associates and trainee solicitors. The workload includes attending meetings, drafting documents and letters and carrying out research (with access to a secretary and the back-up of our Information Centre). We extend our internal seminar programme to include a number of talks, case studies and negotiating exercises specifically for students to give an authentic taste of a City lawyer's work. There are also sporting and social activities, a City tour and ‘working’ lunches and informal evening events.
