In a market where differentiation is often subtle, this US firm has made its mark in London through the careful recruitment of city lawyers which has created a culture of support and the firm has created a brand which has found its niche in the London market. This strategy has been led from the top with the London managing partner being ‘personally invested’ in the office’s continued success, having provided the plan and energy to transform the office over the last five years. It could be described as a below the radar success story, which has adapted to the market whilst maintaining a consistent strategy. This has resulted in all the practice areas now being ranked in the directories and each providing meaningful support to the firm’s US clients operating in Europe. The next stage of growth is enhancing the office by making two key leadership hires and one of those is in corporate.
There are three corporate partners in London, all lateral hires from leading international firms. They would welcome a leader to help drive the practice forward (to be clear they have been consulted about this process). The firm has never just looked at following but how an individual’s practice will integrate within the firm on a sector basis. Management recognises the challenge of recruiting an upper mid-market corporate partner at a US firm in London and during the process will look to focus on how the clients will benefit from a move to the firm. The London office has a strong brand in financial services (funds, trading businesses, commodities, securities, brokerage and banking) and real estate (particularly hotels where there is a leading practice). As those are the key sectors a client following in those sectors will work well and the brand should be an easy sell to your clients. Also as the new head of corporate you will be immediately part of a team involved with key clients in both areas and there will be some interesting opportunities. The practice areas of the future are private equity and private wealth, experience of either would suit the growing strengths of the global corporate practice.
