What we offer
Our trainees take on responsibility from day one and enjoy varied and challenging work for industry-shaping clients. If you become a trainee with us, you will be given every opportunity to fulfil your potential and shape your legal career.
Trainees spend six months in four of the following practice areas: commercial, employment, corporate, banking, intellectual property, tax, dispute resolution and real estate. We run a business skills development programme to provide the basic building blocks for your future development within the business of law. Trainees are also encouraged to take part in CSR initiatives, join the firm’s sports teams and attend various social events. With us, you'll get comprehensive and individual support to ensure you'll always hit the ground running.
Who we recruit
We will recruit 18 trainees during 2016, who will join the firm in September 2018.
We recognise that our lawyers are our most important asset and that is why we recruit strong graduates capable of developing expert legal skills and commercial acumen. A certain level of intelligence and common sense is a prerequisite, but more importantly we look for well-rounded individuals who are articulate, team-players, willing to work hard when called upon and genuinely interested in progressing their careers with us.
Applications are welcome from both law and non-law graduates.
Financial Assistance
We are able to provide graduates who have accepted Bird & Bird training contracts with financial assistance. All Bird & Bird future trainees study at BPP Law School in London.
We review the level of assistance every year. Currently, it includes payment of:
- Your GDL and/or LPC fees
- An annual maintenance grant of £5,500 for each study year (GDL and/or LPC)
Salaries and benefits
We review trainee salaries each September. Trainee salaries as from September 2015 are £36,000 for first years and £38,000 for second years.
In addition, trainee solicitors' benefits include:
• 25 days' paid holiday annually
• medical insurance
• permanent health insurance
• life assurance
• interest-free season ticket loans
• subsidised gym membership
Our summer placement scheme
We have designed a summer placement scheme that provides a rewarding and valuable insight into the life of a modern, forward thinking commercial law firm. Over a six week period through June and July, we take on 30 students for two 3-week placements, for which we pay the London Living Wage.
Emphasis is placed on ensuring each student is integrated into their department and receives the type of work that they could expect as a trainee with us. During the placement students will work in one of the following departments, ideally of your choosing: Banking, Commercial, Corporate, Dispute Resolution, Employment, IP, Real Estate.
If you are interested in a training contract at Bird & Bird the summer placement scheme is a fantastic way to get started.
