The London office of this leading US player in the Energy sector has some 15 partners in total and a 3 partner contentious team recently bolstered by a high profile team hire from a competitor firm. The London office is well established (having been here for several decades) but is about to go into another phase of expansion in recognition of the need for critical mass to compete in this market.
The contentious team does a range of almost exclusively international litigation and arbitration - although primarily arbitration at present - and works closely with lawyers in the Middle East and States on large scale international arbitrations with a focus on complex energy and construction disputes. It is considered among its peers as having a strong offering in this area, but the feeling amongst management is that its market position in this area should be capitalised upon and strengthened yet further.
More generally, the partnership is all equity and with a very "joined up" approach to relationships with other offices although it is felt that more can be done in terms of cross-pollination of clients - certainly a good selling point for someone looking to grow a practice area that internal clients are not mined to death. 70-80% of the work in London is home grown so it is far from a satellite office. In terms of its hiring strategy, the firm has been conservative in the past and perhaps recognises the need to be a bit more strategic and aggressive going forward .The need in this instance is for something of a name in the field with a track record of generating business and the firm is prepared to be flexible on remuneration structure and also competitive on this point. Because of the low leverage in the office, it is felt that a good technical lawyer would be a good fit - someone prepared for a high level of involvement and to "roll up their sleeves".
